THEY’D DO ANYTHING FOR COUNTRY.
AND EVERYTHING FOR EACH OTHER.
After a dark ops malfunction, Major David Berg finds himself dead center in a military trial. It’s a race against time to root out the truth, and Major Sophie Campbell isn’t making that any easier. The hot JAG wants to bring down David’s unit and fast. His testimony is crucial to winning a case that will make her career. All Sophie has to do is ignore this witness’s unflappable charm, his unnerving good looks, and a strong, solid presence that commands her attention.
It’s not easy for David, either. His attraction to this take-charge beauty is turning him inside out. But these adversaries have more in common than secret, mutual desire. There’s a traitor somewhere in the dark ops and now, to find him, David and Sophie must work together—relentlessly, tirelessly, and so intimately it could be damn near fatal
Some men just know how to help a girl out...
It’s a heck of a risky shot. But five years after an ordeal in Iraq, camerawoman Stephanie Rosen’s mojo has gone MIA. There’s only one place she’ll find it...and that’s with the onetime fling who set her fantasies—and panties—ablaze five years ago!
Lieutenant Daniel Murphy’s nights at sea have been haunted by dreams of Stephanie and the brain-melting chemistry between them. Now he’s on leave, and when Stephanie asks him to resurrect her long-lost libido, Danny doesn’t think twice. Now he has twenty days to remind her what she needs. Twenty days to take his time and drive her to the edge.
Twenty days to find complete satisfaction...and full surrender.
Q & A with Catherine Mann & Joanne Rock
Critique partners Joanne Rock and Catherine Mann have worked together since prior to publication when a mutual friend suggested they read for one another. Many shared lunches and exchanged chapters later, they celebrated their first sales within six months of each other. With over a decade of critiquing experience that has landed them over one hundred sales combined, Cathy and Joanne are excited to join forces for a blog tour for the first time to celebrate their September releases, both of which feature military heroes.
Q: What’s your secret to a long lasting critique partner relationship?
C: Don't assume what you want from a critique is the same as what your cp wants. Know what your cp needs from your critiques. Does she/he want a line edit or scene feedback or just overall feedback? Does your cp need strengths highlighted as well as problem areas? The answer to this question may change over the years, so make sure to ask periodically. Also, know how thick or thin skinned your cp is. We're all wired differently - neither way wrong - but be aware when choosing how to craft your critique.
Q: How does having a critique partner save time?
J: First of all, I waste a lot less time angsting about my work. If I have a scene that concerns me, I can show it to Cathy and she’ll either help me diagnose the problem so I can fix it, or she’ll give it a stamp of approval that I trust completely. Either way, I can move forward faster because of our work together. Also, not having to tackle every facet of my career promotion saves me time. When Cathy and I were unpublished and submitting heavily to contests, we would divide up the contests we were interested in and each research a handful, pooling our knowledge afterward.
Q: What’s the most unique tip a critique partner has ever shared with you?
C: In the early days of writing, I wrestled with learning many things about my craft, but I particularly wrestled with penning compelling introspection. Joanne had a fabulous piece of advice for me that really resonated. She advised me to pen those thoughts with the same punch and quirk that I put into writing dialogue, and that would power the words across the page.
A dear friend and early days mentor Jean Walton gave me super advice for writing a balanced synopsis. She told me to highlight sentences that contained story action in one color and to highlight sentences that contained emotional elements/growth in another color. The two should mingle throughout the synopsis, one powering the other and vice-versa. This can make for a fun - and colorful - activity to do with your cp over a fun lunch!
Q: What’s the most unique tip a critique partner has ever shared with you?
J: Because of her theater background, Cathy suggested I think of my manuscript in terms of its visuals like a screenplay. What is the action? What are the gestures? The expressions? Now I can “see” my story unfold instead of merely hearing the words in my head. Her advice helped me to craft stories that are faster paced and more active.
Q:Tell us about how you celebrate your successes!
C: There was a time when our kids were small that a writerly celebration meant loading the kids into the minivan and letting them play at the park for hours while Joanne and I shared a picnic lunch. Sometimes, we celebrated so well the kids would be ready to leave the park before we were!
J: Now that we live far apart and our kids are older, Cathy and I try to schedule joint writing conferences so we can share a hotel room and schedule some time for margaritas or even a decadent spa day.
Q: Any critique partner quirks you can share? Something readers might not know?
C: As the mother of three sons, Joanne knows way too much about baseball. I think that’s why she enjoys picking out clothes for her heroines so much.
J: Cathy operates at a higher speed than the rest of the world, so by the time I’m starting to think I have a plot problem, Cathy already has the fix!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Katrina!!! I am so feeling the love here today. Maureen gave us such an awesomely warm welcome and it's so nice to visit. Also, the tattooed men decorating the blog always make it fun to click on this page :-). Really looking forward to today!
DeleteWelcome, Katrina - I seriously adore Joanne's books too!! :) Thanks for stopping by today!
DeleteI absolutely love Catherine Mann. So looking forward to the Guardian. I haven't yet read anything by Joanne Rock, maybe it's time to pick up one of her books!
ReplyDeleteMorning, Leslie! I can honestly say that all my books have a little touch of Catherine Mann magic since I wouldn't send ANYTHING to an edtior without getting the thumbs up from my awesome cp. She's the bomb :-). So glad you stopped by the blog!
DeleteHowdy, Leslie!! XXOO!!! Thank you for the lovely compliment. And I predict you're going to have a new keeper shelf author once you read FULL SURRENDER. Joanne Rock's books ROCK! (Pun intended. :)
Delete2 more great reads to add! Me & my friends just like to find some quiet time to celebrate. No kids, no husbands-- just us!
ReplyDeletemodularmates(at)comcast(dot)net
Quiet time... such a rare commodity when you have kids. And husbands . My dh is the noisiest one in the house. Thanks for visiting LM!
DeleteHi LM! Isn't is fun to kick back with friends? Joanne & I always have such a blast when we get to see each other at conferences. :)
DeleteGreat questions and answers
ReplyDeleteKit3247(at)aol(dot)com
Thank you!! We had fun passing them back and forth :-).
DeleteMy favorite way to celebrate is dancing! (There's usually beer or rum and cokes involved, too, btw.)
ReplyDeleteluv2readrom (at) yahoo (dot) com
Jen, judging by the dance floor every year at the Harlequin party during RWA, I think it's a MUST for a romance lover to enjoy dancing . We pack the floor and close down the place, year in and year out! But who can stop dancing when they're playing the romance writer's anthem- It's Raining Men???
DeleteI have to admit that I haven't read anything by either author, but will be adding them to my "to be read" pile. My favorite way to celebrate is a quiet evening with my best friend (my hubby) no kids, no cell phones... just the two of us.
ReplyDeletegunn(dot)carole(at)yahoo(dot)com
Hi Carole! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog, especially as Cathy and I are new-to-you writers! We would be thrilled to think we'd convinced a few new readers to give our books a try :-).
DeleteTime with good friends including drinks...love Catherine, have not read Joanne, would love to win...lsscarchuk@att.net
ReplyDeleteHi LS! Believe me, it is a huge pleasure to meet so many of Cathy's fans on this blog tour. I adore her work too and it's fun to share that love with other readers who like the books as much as me :-). Cheers!
DeleteTWO OF MY FAVORITE LADIES IN ONE PLACE!! Awesome!! Have had the honor of reviewing books for both Joanne and Catherine...amazing!! Congrats on the new releases ladies and please keep writing sexy, amazing heroes for me to drool over!!
ReplyDeleteAtastyread@live.com
And you're a favorite of ours right back!! So appreciate those reviews!! Lots more heroes in the works...
DeleteA bottle of champagne and good friends!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Tasha! I posted a champagne recipe earlier this week on the blog tour... French 75. Am also a big fan of champagne in my Christmas punch over the holidays. Yum! So good to have you here!
DeleteI love celebrating milestones! The best way for me and my family and friends is to enjoy our favorite foods. Often it's a bbq. I can't resist the smell :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on two great sounding books!
Cambonified(at)yahoo(dot)com
Na, you are so right! The scent of a bbq cooking is like ambrosia. :) Although, I have to confess I killed our grill last weekend - it was old, but still, am so sad to have to hunt for a new one, especially at the end of summer!
DeleteThe books sound good. I like to celebrate with a nice meal.
ReplyDeletebn100candg(at)hotmail(dot)com
BN, our kids all agree hands-down some of their fav childhood memories were of family dinners. I love the laughter and chatting and overall "togetherness" of sharing a meal!
DeleteBeen a fan and reader of Catherine's for long time. Joanne, havent had the pleasure yet but will add you to my list :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting chat on being critique partners. Its always nice to have someone to bounce your ideas off of - whether they be sane or insane :)
Cindy, your note made me laugh so! I've definitely pitched some crazy story ideas Joanne's way - and she is soooooo very diplomatic in the way she steers me back in the right direction. ;)
DeleteI like to do a nice celebratory dinner with friends and family.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the releases!!

Me too... especially when someone else is doing the cooking . Thank you, Donna!
DeleteNice perspective. I like that you two have found a rhythm that suits you - predicated on making sure you're helping each other rather than giving the feedback you would like to get.
ReplyDeleteGreat point. I think it takes awhile to find that total comfort with someone where you can be really honest and not worry about hurting someone you adore! But bottom line, I'd rather hear the bad news from Cathy than to fall on my face in front of my editor, so if anyone is going to tell me to scrap a scene, I'd like it to be her :-). But in the early days, I would say we took lots of time to be sure we offered as many smile faces on the parts we liked in each other's work as we did pointing out problem areas. And when Cathy makes me laugh out loud or makes me tear up in a story.... she still gets a smile face in the margin :-). I do think it's important to know what we do well so we protect the good stuff! Thank you, Otter!!
DeleteHi! I have almost all of Catherine's books but I have never read any of Joanne's :o( I will have to rectify that asap!
ReplyDeleteEating chocolate whoo, hanging out with friends
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the books
