Hope everyone is doing well this dreary Thursday morning. Hopefully everyone is leaving comments on my Romance at Reader Rally post....there will be another drawing on Saturday and we have the grand prize to pick on 2/1.....
I am going to book club on Sunday night at my friends house. This bookclub was started so some of us former Borders co-workers and customer/friend can keep in touch. And still share our LOVE of books... The book that was picked is....
For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children’s needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach—are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude. Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia’s best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable.
Jude does everything to keep her kids on track for college and out of harm’s way. It has always been easy-- until senior year of high school. Suddenly she is at a loss. Nothing feels safe anymore; every time her kids leave the house, she worries about them.
On a hot summer’s night her worst fears come true. One decision will change the course of their lives. In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive.
Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.
I was reluctant to read this book. I have read many, many books by this author. Kristan Hannah is an amazing author, but she shreds me everytime. Her books are always heartbreaking, they are beautifully written but everytime...... She leaves me with such a heaviness, because she makes you think the what if.... and that is a tough place to go...... But of course, from the moment I picked up the book I was sucked in and rivitted. Knowing there would be something coming that was going to tear me up..... and there was. BUT, this book has had me thinking about it LONG after I finished it.... She is an author that makes you FEEL everytime you pick up a book by her. When we worked at our store, she was always a HOT seller. I read this book in about 3 hours, and I am still thinking about the characters.... To me that is a sign of a very good author.....
Do you read outside the box???? If sooo, what is that genre/book for you??? Lately its womans fiction because I have become addicted to so many other genres, romantic suspense, historical, UF, paranormal, etc, etc, etc.....
HAVE A GREAT DAY.....

Todays book is described by the GREAT Charlaine Harris as "a nifty combination of police procedural & urban fantasy." She is dead on.... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series. And this book was the best one yet. This is book 4 in this series. This series is as follows.........
MARK OF THE DEMON
BLOOD OF THE DEMON
SECRETS OF THE DEMON
SINS OF THE DEMON
The main character is Louisiana homicide detective Kara Gillian, she also happens to be a demon summoner. I LOVE that Kara is sooo badass yet very vulnerable. The world building is awesome, the love triangle is intriguing, it's action packed, and the constant plot twists have you sitting on the edge of your seat. I am dying for the next book. Thanks God my TBR will keep me busy until then.
The homicide beat in Louisiana isn't just terrifying, it's demonic. Detective Kara Gilligan of the supernatural task force has the ability to summon demons to her aid, but she herself is pledged to serve a demonic lord. And now, people who've hurt Kara in the past are dropping dead for no apparent reason. To clear her name and save both the demon and human worlds, she's in a race against the clock and in a battle for her life that just may take her to hell and back.
If your a fan of paranormal/urban fantasy with strong characters and great world building this series is a MUST. As soon as I started this series I read all 3 books in 2 days...... I devoured this 4th book in hours. I love quirky, fabulous books.... This is FANFLIPPINTASTIC....I was chatting with a friend last night, she is the one who told me to read ASAP, as I said before I tend to sit on my FAVES... THANKS REGGIE, you were dead on. I have seen many posts on FB about how this is the best yet, they were all right..... Every book in this series gets better and better. And I enjoyed them all.....
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A FAB SATURDAY!!!!

UNFORGETTABLE, PERFECTION, AN AMAZING THRILLER.....YOU BELONG TO ME BY KAREN ROSE
Let me start off by saying HAPPY, HAPPY FRIDAY............
Don't forget to go leave a comment on MY ROMANCE AT RANDOM READER RALLY BLOG POST...... I will pick a winner for this week, tomorrow.........
I recently read You Belong To Me by the OH SO TALENTED Karen Rose.... This book has been sitting on my shelf signed by her and just calling to me......... I met her in New York last June and she is soooo darned sweet. Sometimes I tend to sit on my fave authors new releases.... WHY??? I don't know, then I read them and kick myself for waiting....it's a cycle...lol.
I devoured this book in one day. It was INTENSE, FAST PACED, and SEXY. I immediately fell into this story. Karen Rose is AMAZING, she weaves a story that sucks you in. She ALWAYS leaves you wanting more..... Karen Rose does one hell of a job balancing murder, mystery, romance and suspense. I read a quote from the WONDERFULLY TALENTED Allison Brennan, that said "Karen Rose is the MASTER of romantic suspense"..... That says it all.
This story, You Belong To Me starts a new cast of characters that she is introducing. It is set in Baltimore. This story features a homicide detective J.D. Fitzpatrick and medical examiner Dr. Lucy Trask. Both have pasts they are constantly dealing with, all the while a crazy killer is leaving dead bodies everywhere. The killer is targeting Lucy, and the characters are in a race to piece it all together before it is to late. Not only did I LOVE the main characters, I especially liked the secondary ones as well. I am hoping to see J.D.'s partner, Stevie find a happy ending, as well as a P.I., Clay. I also loved Lacy's best friends Gwyn and Thorne. I hope to see these characters in future books. So if you are looking for a read that you can not put down. Pick up this book, she never disappoints.......
Years ago, a young girl was beaten and raped while onlookers did nothing. Now those witnesses are becoming victims themselves…
Baltimore city Homicide Detective JD Fitzpatrick has seen a lot of horrific violence, both as a cop and during his deployment in Afghanistan, but nothing like the trail of tortured bodies that are turning up throughout the city. He’s up against a brutal killer with a very personal vendetta. And now JD is beginning to suspect that his medical examiner may be shielding some crucial evidence linked to the case.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Lucy Trask is intrigued by JD’s compassion, but she isn’t about to mix work with pleasure. Not while there’s a ruthless killer on the loose. And definitely not while she’s keeping a dark secret that could connect her to these vicious killings—and put her next on the killer’s hit list…
Have you ever read a book by Karen Rose??? Do you have a favorite???? Come on, you know how I LOVE to chat with y'all....... It's really hard for me to choose, I have not read one of her books that I did not LOVE... And I have read them all. But a character that sticks with me the most is Eve.... Those of you who have read Karen's books know why......What a survivor....
So my friends, HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!! I will see you tomorrow with a winner and another great book I read!!!!!!

MURDER MAYHEM MONDAY..................
Today I am featuring an AMAZING series. I LOVE these books. And the author is lovely. I had a total fan girl moment in New York when I got to meet her. When I was working at Borders, I sold her books ALL the time. I suggested her series to a customer to try one morning. The customer bought the first 2 books in the series. Later that day the customer called me, told me she was mad at me. I said why, she said because I am going to be late for work, I can't put this book down. THAT was the favorite part of my job. So without further ado, todays FAB books & author is......
The OUTSTANDING Linda Castillo.....
Some secrets are too terrible to eveal... Some crimes are too unspeakable to solve...
In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and “English” residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.
Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as Chief of Police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She’s certain she’s come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.
Speak no evil. . .
The Plank family moved from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to join the small Amish community of Painters Mill less than a year ago and seemed the model of the Plain Life—until on a cold October night, the entire family of seven was found slaughtered on their farm. Police Chief Kate Burkholder and her small force have few clues, no motive, and no suspect. Formerly Amish herself, Kate is no stranger to the secrets the Amish keep from the English—and each other—but this crime is horribly out of the ordinary.
When she discovers a diary that belonged to one of the teenaged daughters, Kate is shocked to learn the girl kept some very dark secrets and may have been living a lurid double life. Who is the charismatic stranger who stole the young Amish girl’s heart? As Kate’s outrage grows so does her resolve to find the killer and bring him to justice—even if it means putting herself in the line of fire.
The Slabaugh family are model Amish farmers,
prosperous and hardworking, with four children
and a happy extended family. When the parents
and an uncle are found dead in their barn, it appears
to be a gruesome accident: methane gas asphyxi-
ation caused by a poorly ventilated cesspit. But in
the course of a routine autopsy, the coroner dis-
covers that one of the victims suffered a head
wound before death—clearly, foul play was in-
volved. But who would want to make orphans of the Slabaugh’s children? And is this murder somehow related to a recent string of shocking hate crimes against the Amish?
Having grown up Amish, Kate is determined to bring the killer to justice. Because the other series of attacks are designated hate crimes, the state sends in agent John Tomasetti, with whom Kate has a long and complex relationship. Together, they search for the link between the crimes—and uncover a dark secret at work beneath the placid surface of this idyllic Amish community.
I found this series PHENOMENAL. My husband has also read this series and enjoyed them tremendously. The heroine in this story is Kate Burkholder. She is as damaged as you can imagine and the Chief of Police in this small town. I love how she tries so hard to put her past behind her and to protect her town. In the first book there is a State Agent introduced, John Tomasetti is as damaged as Kate is. And his superiors basically send him there to hide him hoping he won't come back. I always got the sense they hoped he would get himself killed verses there fear he would kill himself. But John and Kate form an unlikely team and not only solve the horrifying murders. But are able to find comfort in each other, very difficult with all there baggage. With each book I found myself eager to learn more about the characters, flaws and all. Linda Castillo is an AMAZING storyteller. This series is chilling, suspenseful and there is a thread of romance. Like a true romantic that I am, I want these characters to find love and solace in each other. In Breaking Silence you see the depth of their pain, but you also see how they are starting to really care for each other..... I am truly mesmerized every time I pick up one of her books. If you are looking for a dark suspenseful book, look no further. Linda writes one hell of a thriller. I have recently picked up a bunch of her back list which are romantic suspense. I will let you know as I have not read them yet... You know how big my TBR is, lol.
As I said last week I will take turns on Mondays featuring one week a lighter cozy mystery the next a darker more suspense filled mystery. I hope you will enjoy the contrast of them. And enjoy each genre for the fun that they are......
Let me know what you think, as you know I love your feedback....
HAPPY HAPPY MONDAY and I hope you are enjoying Martin Luther King Day!!!!

I have enjoyed reading her books for a long time before I had the pleasure of chatting with her on FB. In June I had the pleasure of meeting her face to face. Meeting her was WONDERFUL, she treated me as if I have known her forever. What a lovely way to feel.... When I was in the process of losing my job, a kinder sweeter soul you'll never have rooting for you. She comforted, made me LOL and offered me solace often. I was briefly chatting with her last night, she asked how she could spread the word about her FB group I belong to. I said may I blog, she said would you..... so here I am....
Her group Cherry Adair's Awesome Street Team is much like the other groups many of us belong to. I have met fabulous ladies, and we talk books and other fun filled stuffs. Cherry sends us bookmarks, signed book plates, buttons and other goodies. When I was at the bookstore I gave them to my customers.... since I am no longer there, when I send prezzies to winners I include bookmarks and the other goodies. If I am out and about at book stores and other book selling venues, I leave her bookmarks in books. It is a way to spread the word about a fun, exciting author and her books. We all know word of mouth is key in helping an author get the recognition they deserve.
If any of you lovely ladies wish to join this group, please contact Cherry Adair probably the best way is thru FB. Any problems let me know. She is one of the most kind and generous women. And as I like to say......bitch can write a book..... BUT Cherry is not the B word as my kids say....lol
If you have not read a book by Cherry Adair, I suggest to do so ASAP. You will not be sorry............
HAPPY HAPPY SUNDAY!!!!!!

HOT DAMN..............
Well I just got to say Cindy you were right..... I am completely blown away. I kept it together until the middle of Ch. 18 and I just lost it. This book is truly remarkable. This is a book that makes you FEEL... I sent the author a message last night, your making my belly hurt(remember I got 5 kids, cut me a break). It is heartbreakingly unbelievably AMAZING. I read A LOT, they are very few authors that make me FEEL, make me really think, make the story leap off the pages like it is happening all around me. I fall into books all the time. Don't get me wrong I love the authors that I read, the stories that they tell. But for an author to touch you soooo deeply is rare for me. To make you want to yell, to cry, to scream at the pages... RARE.... The story is leaping off the pages, immersing you in this totally believable world. A world that in todays climate really touches your heart.
She is weaving this story around me and I cant stop reading. When I put it down, I am still FEELING for these characters. I am still thinking about the book and whats going to happen next. I have been reading much lighter books, FABULOUS reads but lighter. This I was not prepared for, but wanted to have good chat with the author. I have heard nothing but positive feed back about this book. But still left it unread on my ipad because I knew Jessica was going to invoke far too much emotion, my gut told me so.
Well I was not wrong, but I was not prepared to be this impressed or awed. This book, Because of You is an absolute MUST read. It will touch you in ways you can not imagine. Off the top of my head there is one other author that makes me yearn, cry and twists me up inside. This authors characters also leaped off the pages. I remember working at Borders and opening the new release boxes and calling my BFF Dawn and squeeling because I was holding Max & Gina's book. We talked about them like they were family. I remember texting her over and over is he dead, is he dead and her saying read the damn book(I let her read particular book first). Such emotion this authors books provoked getting angry at the author for not doing what I wanted... LOL... As I am editing this, another author also comes to mind. A paranormal romance author, she to makes me yell and cry when I read her... No hints for her, it would be toooo easy to guess. She to invokes a ton of emotion from her readers.....
This is the level of GREATNESS you get from this book, Because of You.... And it's her first book....(that I know of). Mind blowing..... I am so excited that she will be coming to chat with us tomorrow night. I miss my store all the more because I can't tell everyone to reads this.. If you don't, you are soooo missing out.
So check it out, come on over 9:30 eastern time Friday January 13th and talk to Jessica Scott....I am off to read more, probably cry more...
HAVE A GREAT THURSDAY!!!!!

PS Who are the other authors I am referring to?????? How do you do FEEL about books like this????

COZY MYSTERY MONDAY.........
I have been trying to think of fun ways to do some features. I think I will switch off on Mondays, Cozy Mystery Monday or Murder Mayhem Monday, every other week. If anyone has a suggestion or a favorite author, let me know.
I never read a cozy mystery, until a friend introduced me. I really, really enjoy them. They are fun, I read somewhere that they are traditional mysteries with a modern twist. I like that description. And now a days there are soooo many to choose from. Between mystery shoppers, donut bakers, cupcake bakers, flower shops, ice cream shops, dog walkers the list goes on and on. One of the very first ones I read and fell in love with were The Blackbird Sisters a series by Nancy Martin....
Today I am going to introduce The Flower Shop Mystery Series by Kate Collins. I love the characters, Abby Knight the owner of Bloomers Flower Shop, her coworkers, her family, her hot hot significant other. There are twelve books in this series so far.
Books in descending chronological order
The Flowershop Mysteries
Mums The Word – 2004
ISBN: 978- 0451213501
Slay It With Flowers – 2005
ISBN: 978- 0451214553
Dearly Depotted – 2005
ISBN: 978- 0451215857
Snipped In The Bud – 2006
ISBN: 978- 0451218315
Acts of Violets – 2007
ISBN: 978- 0451220745
A Rose From The Dead – 2008
ISBN: 978- 0451222411
Shoots To Kill – 2008
ISBN: 978- 0451224743
Evil In Carnations – 2009
ISBN: 978- 0451226235
Sleeping With Anemone – 2010
ISBN: 978- 0451228901
Dirty Rotten Tendrils – October 2010
ISBN: 978- 0451231529
Night Of The Living Dandelion – April 2011
ISBN: 978-0451233011
To Catch A Leaf – November 2011
ISBN: 978-0451235237
To me they are contemporary romances mixed with amateur sleuthing. I love the continuation of characters. So every time you read one of the flower shop stories you are back in New Chapel Indiana, hanging with Abby and her gang. I always smile when Abby's mom, who fancys herself an artist shows up with one of her quirky pieces of "art" for Abby to display in the flower shop. These are not dark mysteries, these are light and fun. I LOVE this series....... I think the titles are also quite fun too.
The most recent is this......
Flower shop owner Abby Knight is aglow with happiness now that she's officially engaged to her longtime beau, Marco Salvare. Nothing can possibly dampen her joy-until wealthy dowager Virginia Newport is killed, and Abby's assistant Grace Bingham is the prime suspect. The plot thickens when they stumble upon mysterious stolen art and a missing cat, all part of an elaborate heist. Before Abby can throw her bouquet, she'll have to save her friend and throw a killer and a thief in jail...
I read a plethora of genre's, they might not be for all. But I think it is fun to check out new and different genre's to each of us.... Let me know what you think..... Have you ever read a cozy mystery???? Do you have a favorite??? Or do you prefer darker mysteries????

HUMOR, ROMANCE, AND HOTNESS....BEST OF ALL GREAT, GREAT FUN... HEAD OVER HEELS BY JILL SHALVIS
What can I say that has not been said before. Jill Shalvis is a pure genius at mixing every aspect of a FABULOUS romance read...... I laugh, I cry, I say awwwww out loud. I have slapped my knee and howled out loud, yes my kids have looked at me like I am nuts but what else is new..... I am....and they have helped me get there, lol.
Today I am giving a shout out to the WONDERFUL read, Head Over Heels. I ADORED this book. And I am totally gaga for Sawyer, YUMMOLICIOUS. This book is the 3rd in the Lucky Harbor Series. I have so enjoyed repeatedly visiting these characters and this town. I love a book that I get it all from lust, love, humor, sweetness etc..... When you read a Jill Shalvis book that is exactly what you get every darned time.... She delivers quality reads. Her humor and abiltiy to make me laugh out loud is a big draw. Life can be very tough, to fall into a book and lose yourself is pure joy. And thats what happens when you begin one of her books.
Head Over Heels is Chloe's story, the free spirited sister. We watch her evolve and want desperately for everyone to see her in a better light. The chemistry between her and Sawyer is off the charts. The little blurbs that Jill puts at the beginning of every chapter are out of this world HYSTERICAL. As I have been saying all week, I am knee deep in my contemporary romance lala-palooza. And this read was FANFLIPPINTASTIC. You must check out Jill Shalvis.....
LUCKY HARBOR SERIES
SIMPLY IRRESTIBILE
SWEETEST THING
HEAD OVER HEELS
LUCKY IN LOVE (May 2012)
AT LAST (July 2012)
FOREVER AND A DAY (August 2012)
As you can see, we will get to re-visit Lucky Harbor again in the near future..... Jill is an auto buy for me, and once you read her she will be for you too. I have had the pleasure of meeting her. She is lovely and I am very excited to see her again at Lori Fosters get together.
Breaking rules and breaking hearts
Free-spirited Chloe lives life on the edge. Unlike her soon-to-be married sisters, she isn't ready to settle into a quiet life running their family's newly renovated inn. But soon her love of trouble--and trouble with love-draws the attention of the very stern, very sexy sheriff who'd like nothing better than to tame her wild ways.
Suddenly Chloe can't take a misstep without the sheriff hot on her heels. His rugged swagger and his enigmatic smile are enough to make a girl beg to be handcuffed. For the first time, instead of avoiding the law, Chloe dreams of surrender. Can this rebel find a way to keep the peace with the straitlaced sheriff? Or will Chloe's colorful past keep her from a love that lasts . . . and the safe haven she truly wants in a town called Lucky Harbor?
So my friends, another FAB read. Let me know if you have read Jill, or are gonna read Jill. LOVE hearing from all of you.... See You Soon....

DELICIOUS, ADDICTIVE AND INTOXICATING......HOLLY LANE BY TONI BLAKE....
I pilched the above quote from the AMAZING Robyn Carr...... Robyn is the one who suggested a while ago to me that I should check out this author. I have been reading her ever since. So again during my mad blogging over the holiday, I picked this book up. Some new friends on FB told me it was FANTABULOUS, they were soooo spot on..... This is bk #4 in the Destiny Series. I really enjoyed revisiting the characters and their small town.
Sue Ann had it ALL, or so she thought. After her life is turned upside down, she is working on rebuilding it. And of course the holidays are coming, she needs to slap a smile on her face and endure it for her daughter. As soon as I started Holly Lane, it was like being welcomed back with open arms. You get to visit with previous characters all the while she is weaving Sue Ann's story all around you. She brings everyday realistic issues and worries to the table, with equally realistic solutions. I agree with something I recently read about her and this series. Toni has a uncanny way of keeping the characters fresh and the storyline exciting....... And she can write HOT & SEXY too. This book has a little bit of everything.... As you can tell I have been on a contemporary romance lala-palooza.. I have read some really, really, really great ones and I want to share......
The weather outside is frightful, but kisses by the fire are so delightful …
Sue Ann Simpkins is working hard to rebuild her life and find some holiday spirit. A weekend away from Destiny in a cabin on nearby Bear Lake seems like the perfect Christmas gift to herself—until her ex's best friend, Adam Becker, shows up at the door, claiming the cabin is his! And if that's not trouble enough, how had she never noticed how gorgeous he was?
Alone for the holidays and forced to play a reindeer at the local department store, Adam's been feeling rather Scrooge-ish himself. But finding the smart, sexy woman he's admired since elementary school waiting in the house he rented is helping to brighten his humbug mood. And when a sudden snowstorm strands them together in very close quarters, leading to one very hot night together, Adam soon realizes that what he really wants for Christmas is a second chance at love. Now all he has to do is convince Sue Ann…
DESTINY SERIES
ONE RECKLESS SUMMER
SUGAR CREEK
WHISPER FALLS
HOLLY LANE
WILLOW SPRINGS (JULY 2012)
If you are looking for another GREAT series, look no further. Check out Toni Blake's Destiny Sereis you will not be sorry......

FANTASTIC READ.......SERENDIPITY
Well over the Christmas Holiday I read a little, in between all my mad blogging..... I picked up SERENDIPITY by Carly Phillips.... WELLLL YEEHAW!!!
Let me say that Carly Phillips hit it out of the park with this book. I guess I am a little late to the party reading it since Destiny came out today. Destiny is the next book, after the short story Kismet (ebook only).
I devoured Serendipty, and was clamoring for MORE...... I have been reading Carly forever, and recommended her all the time at work. I always crack myself up because when I have not read someone in a while and then do. I remember why I LOVED there books in the first place. She is such a HUGE talent in the contemporary romance genre. She writes a little bit of everything into her books forgiveness, heartbreak, romance and totally awesome sexy..... I LOVE when I start a book and I fall into it. I know right at the begining if I am in.... I fell into this story and did not come up for air until I was done. Then I was annoyed, because I NEEDED more. I then quickly read Kismet, a short story and LOVED it too. Every character you meet, you want to know better. I can't wait for Destiny to arrive at my door.....
This series features 3 estranged brothers. Serendipity is about Ethan, the town bad boy, who leaves town and is now baaacckkk. He has redeemed himself and is now trying to reconnect with the 2 brothers he left behind. He is trying to earn there forgiveness while trying to also forgive himself. He reconnects with a teenage flirtation Faith. Who in fact was a very wealthy good girl... Her family is disgraced and she goes home after much turmoil in her life. And who lives in her former childhood mansion. You guessed it.... She has decided to start her own business, and their paths cross....
Between a very HUGE surprise that is dummped on Ethan that forces his 2 brothers to be involved in each others lives. And the SPARKS that fly between Ethan and Faith, this story sucks you in from page one. I highly suggest if your a fan of this genre, to push this series to the top of your TBR pile. Let me know what you think.....
Serendipity | Book 1 in Serendipity Series

I never heard from the winner of Allison Brennan's trilogy, SPAV. Please contact me at mjdownfam@comcast.net. I will give it a week before I redo.... THANKS......
THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!!!!!! Stay tuned and hopefully you will keep on stopping by. I love the idea of a book club. And I am toying with some other ideas..... The most important thing is to chat about books.. I LOVE to read and helping others find a new author for them.....
Today we have a Guest Blogger.... She is witty, warm and "bitch can write a book"..... I ADORE her cozy mysteries. Her series is so much fun.
Safely outside the New York City limits, St. Thomas College was supposed to promise peace and quiet. Unfortunately, English professor Alison Bergeron has found it to be anything but. She recently divorced a fellow faculty member and, more recently, her car was stolen. Then one evening, she gets a visit from two homicide detectives from the NYPD. The good news is that they found Alison's beat-up Volvo; the bad news is that the body of one of the students in her Shakespeare seminar was in the trunk.
Now, not only must Alison continue to hoof it to campus (a fate almost worse than death), she's become a prime suspect for a murder she did not commit--and her efforts to clear her name have landed her in hot water with an even hotter Detective Bobby Crawford, who happens to be a former altar boy, and the sinfully suspicious nuns of St. Thomas. All hell's about to break loose if Alison can't find the real killer…before it's too late.
You’d think, now that she’s off the hook for murder, that Alison, an English professor at a cushy college campus just north of chaotic New York City, would be able to relax. But how can she, with a wedding in the works? A Ph.D can only go so far…
The recently-divorced Alison couldn’t be happier for her best friend, the bride Max. The problem is with the groom. Namely, his best man: the stunningly handsome yet technically married NYPD homicide detective Bobby Crawford. Alison just can’t stop day-dreaming about him—until a new nightmare unfolds.
Alison’s ex-husband has just turned up dead. And now that’s she’s being dragged into another murder investigation—his time, involving the Mob-boss parent of a student—Bobby might be the only man she can trust with her life. But will he ever make Alison his wife? With a killer on the loose, the pursuit of happiness may just have to wait…
College English professor Alison Bergeron thought that dating a cute NYPD detective like Bobby Crawford would be exciting and involve a lot of riding around in cruisers and putting away sleazy crooks, but he has yet to invite her on any stakeouts. . . .
Then when a friend asks her to help him find his nephew, she goes to Bobby for advice only to find out that he already knows about the case. He pulled the boy out of the Hudson River a few days earlier. The boy’s employer calls it an accident, but Alison and Bobby aren’t convinced.
With matchmaking and sleuthing to spare, staying out of trouble isn’t on the syllabus when Alison and Bobby team up in Quick Study, Maggie Barbieri’s most outrageous outing yet.
St. Thomas, the small college north of New York City where Professor Alison Bergeron teaches, has had its share of scandals involving both its students and its staff, not to mention Alison herself, so when a resident director goes missing the administration wants to keep a lid on it. With only five weeks left in the semester and no time to interview replacements, Alison is tapped for the job. An alumna of the college, Alison knows all about living in the dorms. Even a short stay is like doing hard time, and she will do anything to avoid reliving her college days any more than she has to.
Her only way out: Track down the reluctant RD and drag him back kicking and screaming if need be. Luckily, she doesn’t have to look further than the drugs he had hidden in his bathroom to get her boyfriend, Detective Bobby Crawford, on the case.
On her way to meet her boyfriend’s parents, college professor Alison Bergeron stops by a coffee shop to steel her resolve. It’s a big event. Not only is it the first time she’s met NYPD detective Bobby Crawford’s entire family, but it’s coming on the heels of a wedding proposal that she has left unanswered so far.
Then, as she steps into the shop, a brawl breaks out that ends in the death of Carter Wilmott, a merciless and loathed local blogger. The case couldn’t be any simpler, and Alison witnessed the whole thing, but when Wilmott’s car explodes in the aftermath, what looked to be a crime of passion becomes something far more complicated and maybe even premeditate.
With Alison and Bobby involved in the case and with each other, readers are in for a treat. Third Degree, the latest in Maggie Barbieri’s charming mystery series, is one heated mystery with plenty of steamy romance and cunning villains who are about to get burned.
College English professor and sometime amateur sleuth Alison Bergeron would’ve been thrilled to hear that her husband, NYPD Detective Bobby Crawford, was leaving Homicide if that were the whole story, but it turns out that Bobby’s next assignment is even worse---undercover. As if worrying about his involvement in a case he won’t talk about at all wasn’t bad enough, Alison is forced to take over the women’s basketball team at St. Thomas after the coach dies of a heart attack during a game. She may not know much about basketball, but she’s no stranger to sleuthing, and it isn’t long before she suspects that the coach’s death may be more than unexpected but premeditated as well.
With Bobby deep undercover and Alison always on her way to deep trouble, it’s only a matter of time before they run smack into each other in Physical Education, the latest in Maggie Barbieri’s charming Murder 101 mystery series.
So without further ado, please welcome Maggie.....
First, before going any further, I must say a) I love Maureen O’Neill Downey, a person with whom I have never had any face time, and b) I love the name of this blog. Maureen and I became fast friends on Facebook and seemed to have more in common than we really even know. Moms of college-bound seniors, we spend our days talking almost-adults off the ledge about this next, exciting chapter in their lives while making sure the “other ones” (the younger kids) are fed, housed, clothed, and don’t kill each other. Makes for some interesting Facebook posts and email exchanges, to say the least.
But back to this blog. Yes, I can write a book and I’m only a bitch sometimes (I’m looking at you, lady who cut in front of me at Shoprite). How well I write is up for debate if you read the various reviews that are scattered around the internet that either tout me as the second coming of Agatha Christie or someone who should never put pen to paper again. There really doesn’t seem to be any in-between here, any equivocation. It’s sort of like what I said to my husband, a neophyte, when we approached the inexplicably named “Christmas Tree Shoppe” yesterday while out trolling for stocking stuffers. I said to his handsome face, now devoid of color as he navigated the most poorly designed parking lot in the Western Hemisphere, “You’re going to walk in and either think ‘this is the greatest store I’ve ever seen!’ or ‘get me out of here; I’m going into cardiac arrest.’” He decided to go to the Kosher deli next door for a bowl of chicken matzoh ball soup and a sandwich, thereby avoiding any contact with the throngs in the store that sells just about everything.
I digress. I often think about the question “what makes a writer?” because up until recently, my sixth mystery hot off the press, when people would ask me what I did for a living (beside keeping the household in clean underwear?), I would respond “I’m a college textbook editor.” Because that’s what I do most of the day and what pays the rent, so to speak. My husband—the Christmas Tree Shoppe neophyte—finally said to me, “Why don’t you say ‘I’m a writer’?” to which I replied, “Oh, yeah...” like it was the first time this had occurred to me.
Painters who don’t have a piece hanging in the Louvre still consider themselves painters. Teachers who have graduated with an education degree or even aren’t in the classroom anymore still self-identify as teachers. Doctors who don’t see patients on a daily basis still say that they are doctors. But writers? We are an interesting lot. Some of us think that if we’re not published, we’re not writers. Others, even if they are published, don’t think they are truly writers unless they are doing it full time and devoting their entire cache of waking hours to the “craft.” Still others think that you need to write every single day and produce pages and pages of a work to be considered a writer.
Here’s what I think. You’re a writer if:
1. You feel a burning desire to tell a story and will let nothing get in your way to get it down on paper (and it doesn’t matter how long that takes);
2. You carry around little scraps of paper with doodles, be they snippets of conversation, a thought about plot or structure, or just a random thought;
3. You’re a voracious reader. Active readers make good writers. It’s true. Look it up;
4. You’re an inveterate people watcher. Nothing helps develop good characters more, for me anyway, than an hour in the common area in the mall. It’s character gold;
5. You dream about your characters;
6. You don’t think that anything you could possibly write about would be good enough to show anyone.
What do all of these points have in common? Lack of publication. See, I’m a firm believer that writers are born, not made, so if you identify with any of the above, well, I would consider you, like me, a writer.
So, in the new year, all of us writers out there, when someone asks us what we are or what we do, let’s say it loud and proud: “I’M A WRITER!” Feels good, huh?
